Incontinence is not a normal part of growing older. It is often due to our sedentary lifestyle, sitting for long periods and the effects of childbirth. Many of the conventional treatments on offer to women who suffer with incontinence either have side effects or are invasive (such as surgery). It is usually due to the muscles in the pelvic floor not supporting the bladder properly. Holistic Pelvic CareTM helps strengthen the pelvic muscles and you will be taught your own self-care to be able to carry on strengthening your pelvis at home.

Dr Christiane Northrup

Increased pelvic tone and a strong pelvic floor has many benefits to women as highlighted by Dr Christiane Northrup in her book Women’s Bodies Women’s Wisdom: “Developing a strong pelvic floor not only helps prevent or cure urinary stress incontinence, it also increases the blood supply to your pelvis, making you more resistant to diseases such as urinary tract infections. It also enhances the ability to reach orgasm and improves vaginal lubrication during sex.”

What is Stress Incontinence?

Stress Urinary Incontinence is usually caused by weak pelvic floor muscles, often as a result of pregnancy, persistent coughing, genetics and excessive abdominal fat. The number one treatment is to strengthen the pelvic floor. With strong pelvic floor muscles, the urethra (the tube which carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body) is supported and held in place, so that it doesn’t give out when you do anything that increases your intra-abdominal pressure (such as laughing, coughing or sneezing).

What can Holsitic Pelvic CareTM do for Stress Incontinence?

Holistic Pelvic CareTM works directly with the muscles of the pelvic floor using gentle massage, trigger point therapy and myofascial release techniques. Just as we can have a ‘knot’ in our shoulder muscles or sore leg muscles from a workout, this too can apply to our pelvic floor. Women often have pelvic floors which hold chronic tension, or the pelvic floor can be weak. Both a very tense and weak pelvic floor can impede on our ability to tone the pelvic floor and have it functioning optimally, therefore affecting our continence.

Whilst many women know they need to strengthen their pelvic floor, most of us have never had any teaching in how to do this. Not only will you receive a Holistic Pelvic CareTM treatment, but you will be educated in how to strengthen your own pelvic floor as well as carry out your own vaginal/pelvic self care which also helps strengthen your pelvic floor.
